Central Asia, also known as Middle Asia, is a region of Asia that stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to western China and Mongolia in the east, and from Afghanistan and Iran in the south to Russia in the north. It includes the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, which are colloquially referred to as the “-stans” as the countries all have names ending with the Persian suffix “-stan”, meaning “land of”. The current geographical location of Central Asia was formerly part of the historic region of Turkistan, also known as Turan. As one sees from my example of the young migrants organizing nikah, religiosity is interpreted by different people differently. I am still puzzled by one of my respondents – she smokes and lives a liberal western modern life such as wearing sexy western cloth, going to nightclubs, drinking and having different lovers and sometimes for money or favors. The republics which have fared best benefitted from the commodities boom during the first decade of the 2000s. Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan have abundant oil and natural gas reserves and Uzbekistan’s own reserves make it more or less self-sufficient.

If women are prevented from reaching their full potential, then the countries of Central Asia lose out. We are very happy to announce that the program has been renewed in 2022 under the Cryospheric Observation and Modelling for improved Adaptation in Central Asia (CROMO-ADAPT) project, led by the University of Fribourg.

Notwithstanding this, they have emerged relatively unscathed from the global financial crisis of 2008–2009. Growth faltered only briefly in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan and not at all in Uzbekistan, where the economy grew by more than 7% per year on average between 2008 and 2013. Kyrgyzstan’s performance has been more erratic but this phenomenon was visible well before 2008. New geopolitical rivalries only serve to underline its role as a reliable and stable partner, and a champion of the rules-based international order. Despite the efforts of international organizations to improve the condition of women, women themselves maintain the patriarchy , engage in bride kidnapping and arranged marriages, and encourage tradition in invisible ways. Local voices of women help to illuminate their vision of the world, explaining how they envision the kinship system, marriage rules, work, and property relations. Ethnography from Central Asia should be in dialogue with debates on gender and kinship, marriage, and property. Here, there are many similarities between women in Central Asia and their counterparts in Africa and the Middle East, especially when it comes to their strong faith in kinship, property, and power.
